Day 09 (2.11.2023) - Kusadasi - Bergama - Troy
After breakfast in the hotel, we proceed to visit the ruins of Pergamon, an ancient Greek city in the modern city of Bergama, Türkiye today. Pergamon was cited in the New Testament Book of Revelation.
This site rises high above the Bakirçay Plain in Turkey’s Aegean region. The acropolis of Pergamon was the capital of the Hellenistic Attalid dynasty, a major centre of learning in the ancient world. Monumental temples, theatres, stoa or porticoes, gymnasium, altar and library were set into the sloping terrain surrounded by an extensive city wall. The acropolis crowns a landscape containing burial mounds and remains of the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman empires in and around the modern town of Bergama on the lower slopes.
It was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2014.
Our next stop, on the itinerary, was supposed to be Troy mainly to see the legendary Trojan Horse. Unfortunately it was under restoration - so instead, we went to the marina to see the one donated by the producer of the 2004 movie Troy. It's not really that interesting for me as it has no historical value. (In the After-notes of this blog, I have a brief summary of Troy and the legend, from my search on the internet.)
The sunset at the marina was very beautiful.
